NBT's

National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are assessments used in South Africa to evaluate an applicant's academic readiness for university, particularly when supplementing the National Senior Certificate (NSC). They help universities identify potential, ensure appropriate support, and improve student success. NBTs measure skills like academic literacy,

quantitative literacy, and mathematics, which are crucial for university coursework.

PURPOSE

NBTs assess academic skills and knowledge beyond what is covered in the NSC, focusing on areas like academic and quantitative literacy,

and mathematics.

UNIVERSITY ADMISSION

Many South African universities use NBT results as part of their admissions process, either as a supplementary measure alongside the NSC or as a standalone indicator of readiness.

CAN ONE WRITE NBTS ONLINE?

The NBT offers both online and physical venue options for writing the tests. To write online, you will need a computer meeting specific requirements, a stable internet connection, and you will be proctored in a secure online environment.

TWO TESTS & HOW TO PREPARE

NBTs typically consist of two tests: Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) and Mathematics (MAT). You need to focus on understanding the test format, practicing with sample questions, and developing essential skills like critical reading and time management. Familiarize yourself with the types of questions asked in Academic Literacy (AL), Quantitative Literacy (QL), and Mathematics (MAT). â€‹

HOW LONG IS THE TEST?

The AQL test assesses your ability to understand and use language in academic contexts, while the MAT test assesses your mathematical skills. The NBT tests (Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) and Mathematics (MAT)) are each three hours long. Both tests are usually written on the same day, with a break in between.

WHEN SHOULD I WRITE MY NBT?

You should write the NBT before the closing date of your university application, in order to meet all deadlines and requirements for the programme(s) to which you are applying.
